Quantum Machine Learning Research Internship (Summer 2025)

The Institute of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (IAAIR) is dedicated to advancing AI research and its practical applications across industries. Our mission is to bridge the gap between theoretical AI research and real-world implementation by developing innovative, scalable, and impactful AI solutions. We collaborate with industry leaders, researchers, and technology experts to tackle complex challenges in AI/ML, robotics, and automation.

As part of our ongoing commitment to exploring emerging technologies, IAAIR is expanding its research focus to include Quantum Machine Learning (QML)—an exciting frontier at the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. If you're passionate about the future of quantum technologies and eager to explore how quantum computing can transform machine learning, the IAAIR Quantum Machine Learning Research Internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience on leading cloud-based quantum platforms.

Internship Intake

The IAAIR Summer 2025 Quantum Machine Learning Research Internship opportunity will remain open until May 20, 2025. Applications received after this date may not be considered.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in a final-year undergraduate or postgraduate program at a recognized university worldwide. Outstanding candidates who are not in their final year may also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates who are not currently enrolled in a university but have strong research interest in quantum technologies and AI or relevant industry experience may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Be pursuing a degree in one of the following disciplines:

    • Artificial Intelligence

    • Machine Learning

    • Computer Science

    • Robotics & Mechatronics

    • Mathematics & Statistics

    • Electrical & Electronic Engineering

  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

  • A demonstrated interest in quantum computing and its applications in machine learning is highly desirable. Candidates who are currently studying quantum computing or related course or have relevant hands-on experience will be given priority.

  • Prior exposure to quantum computing platforms (e.g., IBM Qiskit, Amazon Braket, Google Cirq) is a plus but not mandatory.

  • Possess good fundamental knowledge in AI, machine learning, data-driven problem-solving, and software development.

  • Previous research experience or a published paper or a blog is highly desirable but not mandatory.

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and implement AI/ML models.

  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate research findings effectively.

Important Notes:

  • This internship is not affiliated with any university. However, if selected, IAAIR can provide the necessary documentation required by your university to facilitate credit recognition (if applicable) or internship approval. It is the applicant’s responsibility to communicate with their university and ensure that the internship aligns with their academic or professional requirements.

  • IAAIR does not provide visa sponsorships or visa related letters. Applicants must have the legal right to work or intern in their respective locations and are solely responsible for ensuring compliance with all visa, immigration, and work authorization requirements.

Internship Details

  • Duration: 12 weeks

  • Commitment: Full-time

  • Start date: 2 June, 2025

  • End date: 22 Aug, 2025

  • Internship Type: Unpaid, undertaken for educational and professional experience

  • Mode: Remote and on-site options available (On-site internships will be at IAAIR headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, USA)

Current Projects

Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI /ML/QML research projects, including:

  1. Comparative Evaluation of Quantum Machine Learning Algorithms on Cloud-Based Quantum Platforms

Intern Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and implement QML algorithms on leading cloud-based quantum platforms such as IBM Quantum, Amazon Braket, and Google Quantum AI.

  • Experiment with various QML techniques (e.g., QSVM, VQC, QkNN) and evaluate their performance across different datasets and platforms.

  • Demonstrate their QML models, highlighting functionality, platform behavior, and comparative performance insights.

  • Deliver a mid-term presentation (10 minutes) by week 6, summarizing research progress, technical challenges, and preliminary findings.

  • Deliver a final presentation and demonstration (15 minutes) at the end of week 12 to IAAIR researchers, industry collaborators, and fellow interns.

  • Submit a detailed final research report outlining project goals, methodology, implementation details, experimental results, and conclusions.

Internship Completion & Certificate

Interns who successfully complete the program will receive an Internship Completion Certificate. The certificate will be issued only after:

  1. The final presentation has been delivered at the end of the internship.

  2. The final report has been submitted and reviewed by IAAIR.

Failure to complete these requirements will result in no certificate being issued.

Benefits of the Internship

This internship provides applied research experience and will:

  • Provide exposure to cutting-edge concepts in Quantum Machine Learning.

  • Offer hands-on experience with leading cloud-based quantum platforms such as IBM Quantum, Amazon Braket, and Google Quantum AI.

  • Strengthen research communication skills through technical documentation, presentations, and collaborative discussions.

  • Facilitate networking with quantum computing researchers, AI professionals, and potential mentors or collaborators.

  • Improve communication and presentation skills through research demonstrations.

  • Build a strong foundation for future academic research, postgraduate study, or careers in quantum technologies.

Application Process

The application must be submitted online here.

This internship opportunity will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.

If you have already applied, please note that due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for the first round of interviews and if successful, there may be an optional second round focused on technical aspects. The final stage involves mandatory reference checks — two references are required.
